Types of freight forwarding

Freight forwarding is a service that involves activities related to the shipment, transport, and receipt of goods. Freight forwarding not only enables the efficient transport of cargo but also ensures the smooth operation of the entire supply chain. This term is often confused with logistics—however, in this case, it is worth remembering that logistics encompasses a much broader range of services, which primarily include transport planning. Freight forwarding can be divided into domestic and international; it is also categorized into road, air, sea, and rail freight forwarding, the choice of which depends mainly on the type of goods being transported.

Domestic vs. International Freight Forwarding

The main distinction in freight transport organization is between domestic services—which cover the territory of Poland—and international services—which encompass all activities involving the transport of goods outside the country’s borders.

Types of freight forwarding:

1) Aviation

This is one of the most reliable methods of transporting goods, as products shipped by air reach their destination the fastest, even over long distances. In this case, it is even possible to transport temperature-sensitive goods, as well as hazardous materials.

2) Road

Trucks with semi-trailers or trailers are used to transport goods by road. This is the most common mode of transport in the country—it is particularly recommended for transporting smaller loads over shorter distances.

3) Marine

The transport of goods by sea is carried out exclusively in containers. This is a safe mode of transport that is also cost-effective. One advantage of this approach is the ability to transport heavy and oversized goods.

4) Railway

As the name suggests, this type of service involves planning and then carrying out transport via rail. Products can be transported in specially marked tank cars as well as in containers, ensuring that they can be located quickly. This method of transport is not only safe but also punctual.
